Check out the new changes at Long Jetty’s favourite yoga studio and garden cafe.

If you’ve been to Modern Organic lately, you’d know what we’re talking about when we say there’s a new energy in the air. The Yoga Studio and Garden Cafe has been taken over by Long Jetty local Adam Bailey, but who is the person behind the welcoming smile? Coasties sat down with Adam for a chat over a cuppa to find out.

For those who have never ventured inside the iconic green walls of Modern Organic, poised along the main drag of Long Jetty in the bustling collective of alternative and unique shops and cafes, you might very well be in for a calming surprise.

The serene garden cafe out the back is often the meeting place for locals enjoying a chai while they cool down after a sweaty heated Vinyasa class; new parents seeking connection and caffeine with their bouncing bubs and understanding friends; or local business people sharing a lunchtime break over a delicious meal while the wind gently blows through the bamboo garden, forcing serenity on those seeking something a little more zen in their day.

For Adam, Modern Organic has for years represented a safe haven where he’s been able to practice yoga without feeling intimidated, and enjoy quality, clean food.

Before the pandemic, he spent 14 years working the corporate grind as CEO of an extremely successful sales business across South East Asia. But the unhealthy lifestyle that goes hand in hand with living in the fast lane soon caught up to him. Intimidated by impressive yogis doing handstands and transforming their bodies into pretzels, he decided to take on a private yoga teacher.

“We spent half of the class talking before practicing but I needed that,” he reflects.

“Yoga starts with a physical benefit – that gets you in the door, but then the spiritual side will keep you there. It helped me so much – it made me realise there was something other than a few drinks at night to settle the nervous system.”

Before long he’d found a new love in yoga.

“It’s another outlet to ground myself. Just like swimming or running, everything is pushed aside, you can be in your own space,” he said.

Planning on taking a break to travel the world (he’s keen for adventure – ask him about the Annapurnas in Nepal), he embarked on a yoga retreat in Thailand to be followed by a trip to Africa. But with the threat of more lockdowns looming, he fast tracked it back to Australia, leaving his African plans for another day.

This was to be a serendipitous move for Adam, who settled into the Coastal lifestyle with ease and even more so into the Modern Organic community. When the previous owners decided it was time to move on, the stars aligned and Adam took a leap using his business acumen and passion for yoga, community and good food to be the new owner of Modern Organic in December 2022.

Loyal regulars have welcomed Adam’s calming but inspiring energy that makes people feel not just like they belong, but that they want to belong.

Since taking the reigns, Adam’s worked with yoga studio manager and teacher Emily to expand the timetable from 18 to 27 classes a week, including some pilates, lunchtime classes and a variety of yoga styles to suit people with all levels of experience (not just for the pretzels). After recent storm damage, the studio is being treated to a refreshed look with new floors and walls, as well as a return to being a welcoming space for people wanting to hold circles and workshops.

The cafe has also experienced a revitalisation – under the leadership of manager Mel and Tammy and the kitchen team, you can rest assured knowing that almost all of the suppliers are local: your coffee’s a ‘Gossie Good Blend’ from Gosford based Legend Coffee; eggs from From Circle Farm; and your baked goods from Copacabana’s Burnt Honey, to name a couple. With a focus on a seriously solid split of fresh vegan and non-vegan offerings on the menu, this is a place you know you can get a wholesomely tasty dish.

Adam’s driving ‘why’ is to make sure everyone in the community, from the yoga members, cafe patrons, staff and local suppliers feels supported and are given opportunities. He’s one of a band of new local business owners luring Coasties to Long Jetty, along with Saia from Glass Onion just a couple of doors down.

On Friday afternoons, everyone’s welcome to the 5pm $5 community yoga class, which is accessible for all levels and raises money for local charities like Coast Shelter and Berkeley Vale Neighbourhood Centre.

“This is an energetic, happy, safe environment for everyone,” Adam said.

“You come in smiling, you leave feeling relaxed and happy.”

Coasties readers, you can take our word for it, we know Modern Organic is in very good hands.

Edit:
