As one of the Central Coast’s most loved and iconic businesses, owned by locals Dan and Julia Hughes, Mr Goaty Gelato launched Australia’s first retail goat’s milk gelato in 2016. Rapidly gaining the attention of foodies, winning multiple awards and featuring in Gourmet Traveller’s 100 Foods to Try in the same year.

As Mr Goaty grew and evolved the direction of the business shifted to a more traditional style gelato made with cow’s milk, focusing their passion and creativity on unique flavours and freshness, churning daily. (When you have a scoop of Spoon Bay, know it was churned that morning!)

Happening organically, the wheels were in motion for their rebrand to Spoon Bay Gelato.

“We’ve wanted to change the name for a long time,” says Julia. “We stopped using goat’s milk years ago. Although many people loved it, there wasn’t a huge demand for an alternative gelato on the Coast. We put all our passion and skill into creating flavours and perfecting the taste and flavours and our hugely popular vegan sorbet.”

“The Goaty name, although also beloved by our loyal customers, did confuse some people,” Julia says.

After selling their cafe at Bar Botanica, Dan and Julia opted to focus on a more mobile approach popping up at corporate events, weddings, beaches, cafes, local farmers markets and collaborating with major local Central Coast events including Avoca Markets, Love Lanes, Glenworth Grazing Festival, Long Jetty Festival and more. Becoming a prominent (and extremely popular) feature at these events as they serve up premium artisan gelato scoops and take-home tubs to adoring fans and loyal customers.

“The response has been amazing, with queues of families buying scoops and take-home tubs. We love having those interactions with our beautiful happy customers.” Julia commented.

Best Gelato on the Central Coast

As a well-loved and respected Central Coast business, the essence of Spoon Bay Gelato is to support local producers by sourcing the best local ingredients. Local Coastie farmers know and love Spoon Bay Gelato giving them access to the pick of their produce. Think figs, citrus, finger limes, rhubarb, stone fruit and botanicals like lemon myrtle for them to create new flavours with.

A true family-owned and operated business, they offer sweet deals for other Coastie businesses who want to treat their teams or promote their brand. They also have an “honesty freezer” at their Lisarow warehouse where you can grab tubs any time!
