There’s no denying it, if you’re into camping then the Central Coast is a stellar spot. Big wide open spaces, plenty of beach-front campgrounds and secret spots hidden all over the region.
Want to know our top picks? Well, we’ve listed the camping spots that not only plunge you into nature but also give you the best darker-then-dark vantage points for stargazing.Â
1. Tallow Beach Campground
For those who like a camping spot cut away from the rest of the world, then the Tallow Beach Campground is for you. It’s isolated and to get here, you’ll need to schlep all your camping gear, including drinking water as there’s none available on-site, 1.2km through the bush.
But it’s worth it as this little pocket of a campground is stunning. There’s beachfront views, idyllic swimming spots and great fishing, if that’s your thing. When night falls, you’re plunged into deep darkness with only the stars for company. Oh and the other inhabitants from the six tents this small spot allows.

2. Little Beach Campground
Just like Tallow, Little Beach is a bit of a hike. It takes 30 minutes from the car park to this camping area but there’s something seriously special about the Little Beach Campground. It’s perhaps why it’s generally booked out every summer and you have to be pretty quick to get in.
After all, just look at the incredible photograph above by Coast photographer Prabhjot Sunyara. Go check him out on Instagram.
Okay, back to the campground. There’s toilets, BBQ facilities and picnic tables, but most of all, there’s easy access to the surrounding walks in Bouddi National Park.

3. Patonga Camping Ground
Apologies to the residents of Patonga who like to keep this Central Coast camping spot under wraps. But the Patonga Camping Ground is one of the most superior on the Coast.
Yes, you’ll see stars at night. But in the day, you’re surrounded by water. Straight ahead, there’s Patonga Beach and snaking around the campsite is the Patonga Creek. Both brilliant swim spots.
There’s un-powered and powered sites, toilets, barbecues and even laundry facilities.
4. Frazer Campground
Found in the Munmorah State Conservation Area, the Frazer Campground is really for the adventurers amongst us. It’s ideal for swimming, surfing, diving, fishing and hiking. After a full day on the water, this small and pretty secluded campground is plunged into complete darkness due to its location so those stars shine bright. Here you’ll find a picnic bench, a BBQ, toilets and a shower, which you’ll have to share with just six other sites.
Congratulation!
