Bindi & Minka’s Favourite Dog-Friendly Bushwalks on the Central Coast
Strickland State Forest
A 10 minute drive from Gosford, Strickland State Forest is an absolute winner for dog-friendly walking tracks. The Arboretum Track is a 2.3km loop that takes you through one of Australia’s oldest arboretums, with a mix of rainforest and towering trees.
The swinging bridge makes for a fun photo op, and there are great facilities including picnic areas with toilets, tables, shelters, and fireplaces to make a day of it, with entry gates open from dawn to dusk daily. Dogs are allowed off-leash throughout the forest (as long as they’re under control).
Tip: The trails can get a bit muddy after rain, so wear good shoes and bring a towel for your pup!
Norah Head Nature Trail
For families seeking an easier track near the coast, the Norah Head Nature Trail is a gentle 1.6km return walk through lush coastal bushland.
The flat, well-maintained path features interpretive signs explaining the native plants you’ll see along the way, leading to two whale-watching platforms with epic ocean views and plenty of potential whale sightings during migration season. And of course, you end up at the iconic Norah Head Lighthouse.
Dogs must stay on-leash here, making it a great choice for younger pups or relaxed weekend strolls with the kids.
Tip: It’s a popular trail on weekends, so consider getting there early in the morning.
Olney State Forest
Located about 40 minutes northwest of Tuggerah in the Waratah Mountains, Olney State Forest is a peaceful escape into nature! The Pines Walking Track is a scenic 1.7km loop that takes around 45 minutes, winding through eucalypt forest and alongside Dora Creek, with a sweet little rock pool along the way. Dogs are permitted off-leash if they’re under control, and there are loads of free and secluded camping spots if you want to stay overnight. You’ll feel miles away from real life!
Tip: The road in is unsealed and can get muddy after rain. Bring plenty of drinking water for both humans and hounds.
