Healing is a journey that takes many routes, but there’s one path bound to be followed: the mind. Throughout time, crystals have been a part of that journey, and despite confronting its fair share of critics, have become more accepted as valuable tools in promoting good health.

Just ask 36-year-old Tanya Holmes – a self-proclaimed ‘metaphysical junkie’ and founder of Gosford’s new crystal retailer, Ignited Soul.

She has experience using crystals since the age of nine, honing a lifetime of knowledge in incorporating precious minerals into her everyday life.

For her, they are powerful tools that can positively contribute to one’s wellbeing.

“Crystals have been a part of my life forever. I’ve always been quite spiritual,” she told Coasties Magazine.

“For me, they are steppingstones into a whole other world of healing. They have beautiful metaphysical, energetic properties.”

Tanya is not alone in that belief having witnessed a significant surge in people’s intrigue with them.

“I think people really want to try new ways of thinking and doing things,” she said.

“Throughout history, crystals have been used as a meaningful way to enhance people’s lives and, if we’re able to tap into that somehow, that’s beautiful.”

Contrary to negative attitudes about people who practice alternative medicine, Tanya wants to include crystal and energetic healings in cooperation with traditional methods of wellness in a positive way. She reinforces the importance of adopting a holistic approach to health by seeking professional help whilst also advocating for the benefits of spiritually aided recovery.

“I want crystals to become a tool for healing that coincides with traditional healing methods such as therapy with a psychologist and other practitioners. I would absolutely love to see them work together,” she said.

“Crystals are another tool we can add to our repertoire to help elicit positive change in our lives. We can incorporate them into practices such as meditation to help us feel calmer, grounded and more connected to nature.”

At Ignited Soul, Tanya welcomes newcomers and regulars in store, or online, to browse her carefully hand-picked collection of thoughtfully sourced crystals. She encourages people to be guided by their intuition and closely inspect what they are drawn to, all the while helping them understand the unique characteristics that each mineral possesses, including her favourite pink Amethyst.

Once a crystal has been selected, Tanya will help customers craft a therapeutic routine – known as a ‘ritual’ – for the individual to perform during heightened emotional states, such as stress and anxiety. Doing so aims to evoke a soothing, reassuring effect to support them. She also suggests penning your thoughts and placing them near the crystal to “solidify to the universal that you really mean business”.

“When you write something on paper…you’re speaking to the world and to yourself. You’re using crystals to elicit change and make positive impacts in your own life,” Tanya said.

“It’s all about the power of the mind.”

For Tanya, crystals play a central role in spiritual healing. So too does listening to your inner dialogue and being led by intuition – in other words, trusting that ‘gut feeling’. It has helped drive her success with Ignited Soul, following a job redundancy during Covid, and the launch of her new shop in Mann St arcade.
