When you’ve got eight families, 15 adults, 16 kids and a winter camping weekend at Glenworth Valley ahead of you, comfort quickly becomes a priority.

The Coasties Mag team spent the entire June long weekend camping at Glenworth Valley alongside friends and family, soaking up everything the nature-focused campground had to offer.

While the weekend itself was a cup-filling kind of experience, one unexpected star of the weekend was a compact little camper from Shamrock Caravan Shop that had everyone talking.

Enter the Tucana.

Camping at Glenworth Valley with the Tucana teardrop camper

Kindly loaned to our friends Jenny and Matt by the team at Shamrock Caravan Shop in Charmhaven, the Tucana proved that camping and comfort can absolutely go hand in hand.

The Tucana Teardrop Camper is a compact camper trailer designed for easy towing and comfortable sleeping for small families. It features a double bed with lounge conversion, practical storage and a kitchen setup – good for weekends away without needing a full-size caravan.

It offered a convenient base to store gear, prepare snacks and take a breather when needed. At night, it transformed into a cosy retreat where Jenny and her two children, Rufus (11) and Willa (5), enjoyed a warm and comfortable sleep away from the winter chill.

Matt, meanwhile, opted for the tent – and he had a lot to say about that each morning as he reminded everyone how cold he’d been overnight!

Jenny and the kids, on the other hand, couldn’t stop talking about the comfort of the Tucana. Sharing the double bed together, they had plenty of room to settle in after big days exploring the valley and campgrounds.

“The kids absolutely loved it,” Jenny told us. “It was the perfect size for us, comfortable, warm and so easy.”

What it’s actually like to hire a caravan for a weekend

Nikki and her family spent three nights in “Rosie”, a larger Shamrock caravan generously loaned by owner Rosario.

Sleeping two adults and three young children with ease, Rosie featured a double bed, a bunk and a converted table bed, making it a perfect fit for a family looking to escape for the weekend without sacrificing comfort.

For Nikki, the biggest takeaway wasn’t just the warmth or the convenience. It was the service.

Rosario personally delivered the caravan to Glenworth Valley on Friday afternoon, and then returned on Monday to collect it. It’s that level of care and genuine service that has earned Shamrock Caravan Shop such a strong reputation across the Central Coast.

While hire-before-you-buy is the service that got us excited, Shamrock is more than just the team that loaned us vans for the weekend. They’re the Central Coast’s authorised Tucana dealer and also handle full servicing and repairs – so the same place that got these families out camping is the one that keeps vans like Rosie road-ready long after the weekend is over.

And, Rosario’s generosity became a talking point across our entire campsite. Not content with simply delivering accommodation, she also dropped in supplies for our group of kids to make s’mores around the campfire. With 16 excited children involved, it’s fair to say she became pretty popular.

While the caravans certainly made camping easier, the Glenworth Valley setting did the rest.

The kids spent hours exploring the natural surrounds, playing in the campground playground and making new friends. Parents could relax knowing there was plenty of space for children to safely enjoy the outdoors while still having access to excellent facilities.

Is a caravan better than a tent for family camping?
For families camping in winter, a caravan is significantly warmer and more practical than a tent. You get a proper bed, shelter from wind and rain, and usually a small kitchen setup, without needing to pack as much gear.

For many people, the idea of camping is appealing, but the reality of sleeping on the ground – especially in winter – isn’t always quite as attractive. That’s where the Tucana “ready to camp” package with Shamrock Caravan Shop really shines.

The Shamrock Caravan Shop experience

Located in Charmhaven, Shamrock Caravan Shop offers caravan sales, servicing and repairs, helping locals get out and explore with confidence. Their knowledgeable team can assist with everything from finding the right caravan to keeping existing vans road-ready, with a reputation for getting customers back on the road quickly and efficiently.

And if you’re curious about the caravan lifestyle but not quite ready to commit, experiences like ours highlight the value of trying before buying.

After one weekend watching Jenny and the kids cosy up in the Tucana while Matt emerged from his tent looking increasingly frozen each morning, we definitely know which option we’d choose.

If a comfortable weekend escape sounds more appealing than sleeping on the cold ground, it might be time to pay Rosario and the team at Shamrock Caravan Shop a visit.
