The great American author Dean Koontz once famously said, “petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer.”

But you don’t need to tell Wamberal photographer Amanda Brook that. She already knows.

After devastatingly losing both of her parents and brother in the space of three years, she found deep comfort in the company of her furry companion. Walking the sands of Wamberal beach with her dog while processing her grief, she credits her canine pal with saving her life.

“She would just play on the shore while I sat and watched, she was my friend. There’s a deep, unspoken connection straight to the heart between an owner and their dog,” Amanda said.

It’s a connection many Central Coast families would understand, which is why Amanda speaks with such passion when talking about the beautiful portrait photography sessions she runs.

“Dogs just make me smile, they make me laugh, they’ve got great personalities and they bring pure joy to the families they are a part of,” Amanda told Coasties mag.

“The families I work with often ring me back once they’ve seen their photos and say, ‘oh my goodness I’m in tears, you’ve captured our dog so perfectly!’ and that makes me smile because I want to show their funny and special little personalities in the photos.”

Amanda rightly points out that if dogs are such an important part of our family life, we ought to have them framed on our walls just like the other family members we hold dear.

Her website and instagram account, under the tongue-in-cheek business name Shoot the Pooch, house incredible galleries of the stunning images Amanda has captured over the past few years running her photography business.

Family portraits featuring young couples, large families, or just the kids are all scattered through the pages but it’s the depictions of the big dogs, little dogs, fluffy dogs, tough dogs, swimming dogs, running dogs, and lazy dogs on their own and with their humans that really impress.

“These photos capture a moment in history that you’ll never get back, they’re a lasting memory that can be hung up on the wall and give people a feeling of joy and warmth and a little smile every time they walk past,” Amanda said.

The fun and relaxed photo sessions are conducted at local locations where pets and their owners are most comfortable, from their local beach to their local park or walking tracks. Take a look and you’ll quickly recognise the dogs and their families are happily at ease in front of the lens.

This Coasties writer will admit she was so impressed by Amanda’s passion and talent during the interview for this story that she found herself booking her kids in for a shoot with their big sister, their 10-year-old greyhound.

And the photos did just as promised – made us laugh, smile, warmed our hearts and provided us with beautiful, high quality memories frozen in time – of all of the kids, dog included.

It was clear from the get-go that Amanda’s experience as a teacher’s aide gave her the warm, gentle and fun skills required to work with children but it’s the age-old, feared combination of working with kids and pets that she had evidently mastered.

If you’d like to book in a photo shoot with Amanda and your four-legged family members, head to her website and select ‘Schedule Appointment’. You can also check out her Facebook page.
