NumberWorks’nWords is Helping Kids Build Confidence in Maths and English

With NAPLAN starting next week, we know plenty of Central Coast families are starting to feel the shift. For some students, it’s just another assessment. For others, it can bring nerves, self-doubt or pressure – especially if they’ve already decided they’re “bad” at maths or English after one tricky question.

If you’re supporting a child in Years 3, 5, 7 or 9, here’s the steady reminder we all need: NAPLAN is a snapshot. It’s not a verdict, and it can’t predict who your child is going to become.

A single standardised test cannot measure creativity, problem-solving ability, resilience, empathy or the many other skills that shape a child’s development. It won’t tell you if your child is the one who always helps a classmate or thinks outside the box. And it certainly doesn’t sum up their potential in a single band score.

Overcome NAPLAN nerves with NumberWorks’nWords tutoring

Eimear Hughes, owner of NumberWorks’nWords in Erina, is refreshingly calm about the whole NAPLAN thing.

“Testing isn’t about catching students out,” she told us. “It gives information. And when you use that information well, it can guide really meaningful growth.”

Instead of seeing NAPLAN as something to fear, Eimear encourages families to reframe it as a source of useful feedback. And with more than 30 years’ experience as a teacher and educator, we reckon she knows what she’s talking about.

“What kids need most before any assessment is calm reassurance, not panic prep,” says Eimear. “When the adults around them remain steady, they’re more likely to approach the experience with confidence.”

Yes, NAPLAN results can highlight areas that need strengthening – and the team at NumberWorks’nWords welcomes these as a roadmap of sorts. But they also show where a child is doing well – and it’s just as important to celebrate those wins.

Making Sense of Your Childs NAPLAN Results

Where many families feel stuck is after the results are released.

What do the bands actually mean? Is this where my child “should” be? Should we be concerned?

This is where experience makes a real difference. Eimear is used to sitting down with families and translating those numbers into clear, practical insight. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by charts and comparisons, families are supported to understand the skills sitting beneath the numbers – and from there, learning becomes purposeful.

Instead of broad goals like “get better at maths,” they create personalised plans that focus on specific gaps. Clear direction that supports steady improvement over time – because real progress isn’t built by cramming the week before a test. It’s built through consistent, year-round skill building.

One thing they see every day at NumberWorks’nWords? When the foundations in maths and English are strengthened, everything else shifts. Confidence rises. Stress drops. Students become more willing to attempt tricky questions instead of shutting down or panicking. And when children start to really “get it,” their results tend to lift – not because anyone pushed them harder, but because they finally feel capable.

That confidence doesn’t just help with NAPLAN. It carries into classroom learning and future assessments.

Personalised Maths and English Tutoring in Erina

At NumberWorks’nWords Erina, small tutor-to-student ratios and structured programs aligned with the NSW curriculum mean support is targeted, not generic. The focus isn’t just on getting answers right – it’s on understanding how and why something works, so students can think independently long after the test is over.

So as NAPLAN approaches, here’s our gentle reminder: keep perspective. Prioritise rest and routine, and remind your child (and yourself!) that one test does not define them.

And if you ever find yourself staring at a result, wondering what it all means, know that there are local educators who can help you make sense of it – calmly, clearly and without alarm bells.

Because while NAPLAN may offer a snapshot, growth happens over time – and every child deserves the opportunity to grow with confidence.

Erina excitedly welcomes NumberWorks’nWords, because every child learns differently

January 2026

NumberWorks’nWords Erina opened in January 2026

With the festive season now well and truly under our belt, and parents wading through the depths of the school holidays, the anticipation of the 2026 school year is no doubt starting to build. All that in mind, the timing of the new NumberWorks’nWords franchise landing in Erina this January is absolutely impeccable. You may have already spotted their schmick new building alongside Carpet Court on The Entrance Road in Erina, a prime and central location for the brand new Central Coast tutoring centre specialising in maths and English tutoring for school students.

So, whilst some kids may be bubbling with excitement and eager to take their next big step into their new grade, on the flipside, some kids will definitely feel some anxious nerves. Wherever your kiddos (and you) sit on the scale, one thing the team at NumberWorks’nWords in Erina knows is that all children learn differently and have varied experiences when it comes to education and learning. They’re bringing personalised maths and English tutoring (for kids from Kindergarten through to Year 10), right into the heart of the Coast. With the view to help Central Coast parents give their kids a little extra support (or a stretch) with their learning.

Tutoring and tuition on the Central Coast

At the helm of the new centre is experienced educator and long-time NumberWorks’nWords franchisee (who also owns the Mosman and North Sydney centres), Eimear Hughes. Coasties Mag recently caught up with Eimear to learn more about what Coasties’ parents can expect from her and the centre. With her background as a primary school teacher and senior school leader in Belfast for 13 years, Eimear has spent her career helping kids not just improve results but build confidence in themselves as learners. And, let us just say this, Eimear is friendly, kind and compassionate, and we can see how kids instantly feel at ease in her presence.

Since opening her first centre in 2009, Eimear has worked with thousands of students, watching them go from unsure and overwhelmed to confident, capable and even excited about learning!  How good? Now, she’s bringing that same passion and experience to Erina, supporting local families across the Central Coast.

Q&A with Eimear Hughes

CM: Eimear, tell us why families should choose NumberWorks’nWords?

EH: NumberWorks’nWords offers families a free assessment to gauge and learn more about where your child is with their learning. Even though the programs we run are aligned with the NSW curriculum, we tailor tutoring (based on your child’s assessment) so that it meets their individual needs.

We run with a small tutor-to-pupil ratio, and our in-centre tuition is delivered weekly with real-time goal tracking by trained tutors who are experts in their subjects. This personalised approach to tuition caters to students of all abilities and complements the work that students do at school.

Our tutors also place a priority on getting to know the whole student, including their hobbies and interests, and provide a safe, inclusive and welcoming (and supportive) learning environment for all students.

CM: Tell us how the free assessment works?

EH: It’s offered for maths and English to help identify gaps and weaknesses. The maths assessments cover all aspects of the curriculum, while the English assessment addresses the core areas of reading, comprehension, spelling and writing. We take this info and work closely with the parents and child to develop a personalised learning programme that meets each child’s learning needs. We often find that this personalisation can get overlooked in the classroom.

CM: What are the advantages of going with an established tutoring company over a freelance private tutor?

EH: Using a combination of our bespoke tutoring software and experienced and engaging tutors, NumberWorks’nWords incorporates traditional learning methods into teaching practices.

Maths and English tutoring is beneficial for students who need extra support or are falling behind at school, as well as those students who require extension work that challenges them. We find that one-on-one private tutoring can often make the student feel more pressure and can make them afraid to get the answer wrong. With our small pupil-to-tutor ratio, we provide a safe learning environment where the tutor and the student come to the answer together, with a focus on mental strategies, rather than just getting the answer correct. This type of tuition creates more independent learners with a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

Our tutors also go through a thorough hiring process, are trained by me (Eimear) and my experienced managers, and all have valid Working with Children Checks, so you know your child is in safe and capable hands.

CM: Tell us about NumberWorks’nWords School Holiday Program?

EH: We’re so excited to offer school holiday programs to prepare children ahead of terms. The focus is on confidence building and getting ahead (or catching up) before going back to school, and sessions will be tailored to each child’s level.

In January 2026, we ran two programs that took place over three days each, and there will be more programs coming up at the NumberWorks’nWords Erina centre.
