When an emergency strikes on the Central Coast, whether it’s a lost bushwalker, a road accident, or floodwaters rising, there’s one group of people who answer the call: the volunteers of the Central Coast Rescue Squad. They’re not full-time emergency workers. They’re your neighbours, your colleagues, your kids’ soccer coaches. They’re ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.
The Squad is a 100% volunteer-run organisation, providing critical rescue and support services across the Coast, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their area of operation stretches from Ourimbah and Bateau Bay in the south, out west to Kulnura, and up to Lake Munmorah in the north. Their work is wide-ranging, from land searches, road crash rescues, vertical and water rescues, storm and flood response, and even helping other emergency services with vital logistics. And all of it is powered by locals who give their time, energy, and heart for free.
Meet the Central Coast’s Quiet Heroes
One of those locals is John, an accountant who commutes to Sydney during the week and raises two boys at home. In his spare time, he responds to emergency call-outs. “There’s nothing quite like knowing you’ve helped someone through their toughest day,” John says.
Then there’s Kiera, a former lawyer turned paramedic, now balancing life with three energetic kids. She joined the Squad three years ago. “The best part,” she explains, “is knowing someone’s worst day might feel a little less scary because we showed up.”

Their stories are proof that everyday people can do incredible things. The Squad is made up of accountants, teachers, paramedics, tradies, IT specialists, real estate agents, council rangers, and more. Many are mums and dads with busy family lives, showing that with the right training and support, anyone can step up to make a difference.
And training is key. No prior experience is necessary. The Rescue Squad provides comprehensive training to prepare new members for any challenge. Whether you’re climbing ropes for a vertical rescue, wading through floodwaters, or supporting operations from behind the scenes, you’ll gain skills that are practical, life-changing, and always valued.
What’s perhaps most inspiring is the sense of community. Members are united by one simple motivation: the desire to help others. It’s about teamwork, resilience, and showing up for your community when it matters most.
