A long-time Central Coast local, David brings more than three decades of experience to his art. Having emigrated from England in 1970, he first trained as a decorative and ornamental plasterer, quickly rising to the top of his trade. You’ve probably seen some of his work without even realising – from Sydney Town Hall, to churches, cathedrals and some of Sydney’s fanciest addresses. But it was his work hand-carving heritage details that eventually led him to sculpture – a move that’s allowed his creativity to truly flourish.

Now working as a full-time legend with a chisel (aka sculptor), David explores many mediums including limestone, soapstone, timber, slate, cement, plaster, found objects and clay. His creations are a proper mix of bold statement pieces to beautifully details giftware and jewellery, all crafted with precision, care and a deep appreciation for form.

Did you know… David was part of the Creative Spaces program back in 2023, too.

He loves that being the artist in residence allows him to showcase and sell his work – while also creating new pieces live on-site. Visitors can explore his ever-evolving gallery space, chat with him about his process, and learn the stories behind individual artworks. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, strolling past on your way to grab a coffee, or just looking for something creative to do, you’ll find David’s temporary studio a welcoming and inspiring space. Pop your head in and say hey, he’s there every day but Saturdays.

As part of his residency, David is also inviting a rotating group of guest artists, jewellers and creators to share the gallery with him. This means there’s always something new to see – making it a place where locals can return again and again to discover something new.

How Creative Spaces is bringing Toukley Village Green to life

Creative Spaces is an initiative by Central Coast Council that bring quiet corners of the Coast to life. It offers local artists, makers and performers a chance to exhibit their work, connect with the community, and gain real-world experience in a supported, accessible setting.

For artists, it’s a launchpad. For the community, it’s a way to experience creativity up close – not just as something to observe, but as something to get involved in. It’s about watching it come to life, having a go yourself, and getting to know the maker behind the work. The Gallery Container at the Toukley Village Green is quickly becoming a hub for inspiration, learning and connection.

Creative Spaces is all about activating public spaces and creating opportunities for connection through art – and David’s residency captures that perfectly.

So drop into Creative Spaces at the Toukley Village Green before 5 September to have a chat, get your hands on some clay, and see what David’s creating next. We reckon you’ll walk away with a fresh spark of inspiration – and maybe a bit of chalk on your hands.
