Whether you’re out for a walk with the pup, a sunrise surf or a brunch with friends, there’s something about Central Coast beaches that keeps us coming back. And luckily for us, our region boasts 41 beaches to choose from, across 80km of glorious coastline, so there’s always a spot to suit the mood.
From small, peaceful bays to buzzing tourist faves, each stretch of sand has its own unique character, shaped by the locals bringing you the best hospitality and spirit.
So, pick your vibe and then pick a beach to match.
Most Popular Central Coast Beaches
1. Avoca Beach
In the summer months, Avoca Beach is hard to beat. It’s the hottest destination on the Central Coast, and with good reason. There’s a large ocean rockpool that’s safe for kids to swim in, two playgrounds, decent surf and plenty of cafes and restaurants within walking distance. A fave for us is fish & chips on the beach from the award-winning Avoca Beach Seafoods. Head up to the lagoon entrance to let the pups frolic. Patrolled during high season.

2. Pearl Beach
Often dubbed one of the prettiest Central Coast beaches, Pearl Beach is a stunning stretch that sits quietly on Broken Bay. The safest area to swim is at the southern end of the beach where the water is calmest, or in the ocean pool. Make sure you pack a lunch though, as there are currently no cafes or restaurants in Pearl Beach village. We’ve got our fingers crossed that we’ll be able to welcome Amalfi back one of these days!
3. Terrigal Beach
There’s no such thing as off-season at Terrigal Beach. It’s as lively in winter as it is in summer, with surf lessons happening year-round. There are also heaps of Terrigal cafes and restaurants to choose from. For us, we love a dip in the ocean followed by breakfast at Bellyfish. Wander the Terrigal shopping trail, sunset drinks at Maew Maew or the Terrigal Beach House before a pizza dinner at Rhonda’s. But really, the options are endless. Patrolled during high season.
4. Terrigal Haven
That’s right, Terrigal has two beaches. The haven can be found at the southern end, linked by the Terrigal Boardwalk. Here, the waters are calmer, making it a favourite Central Coast beach for families with young kids. Grab a meal or a drink with a view at the Terrigal Pavilion, then – if you’ve got the stamina – tackle the walk to the top of The Skillion for sweeping views from Avoca to Wamberal.

Central Coast Beaches for Surfing
5. Macmasters Beach
An absolute Coasties favourite. The pool at the southern end is perfect for swimming laps and playing with kids. It’s a shallow wading pool so there are no sudden drop-offs or sharp rocks. Above the beach you’ll find a grassy picnic area with a communal BBQ and toilets. Safe for swimming, the local surf lifesavers also run rip current dye demos, releasing coloured dye into the water to show how rips move – a brilliant visual for beach safety. Glorious views up top at Macs Beach Cafe.

6. Wamberal Beach
There’s something truly breathtaking watching the sun rise over Wamberal Beach. It explains why so many people walk the length of it daily, all the way down to Terrigal. This is a popular spot with dog owners too, with off-leash access near Wamberal Surf Life Saving Club. We like to get our coffee-to-go from Sal & Co first.
7. Copacabana Beach
For those looking for a decent surf beach, it has to be Copacabana Beach. The waves can get monstrous here, which is great for the surfers (but not so good for anyone else!). There’s a tidal pool during low tide which is more suitable for kids on calmer days. Post surf treats from Burnt Honey Bakery are basically non-negotiable.
8. Little Beach
Found at the end of a bush track, Little Beach is a magical spot that feels like a hidden escape. There are plenty of rockpools to keep the little ones busy, while the grassy bank is perfect if you prefer a picnic sans-sand. Note that this beach is unpatrolled and can get choppy. It’s also the starting point for the scenic walk from Little Beach to Macmasters.

9. Shelly Beach
If you’re learning to surf or prefer gentler waves, Shelly Beach is a great pick. Surf classes run most weekends, even through winter. Afterwards, why not walk down to the main strip of shops in Toowoon Bay and grab an iced coffee at Rascals @Toowoon?
Calm Central Coast Beaches
10. Patonga Beach
In the summer months, Patonga Beach is one of the most popular day trips on the Central Coast thanks to the ferry connection from Palm Beach bringing our neighbours from the Northern Beaches. But the joy here is there’s plenty of beach so it never feels cramped. Calm water near the jetty makes it ideal for families, plus there’s a playground close by. For takeout fish and chips, head over the kiosk at the Boathouse Hotel Patonga Beach.
11. Ettalong Beach
Generally, the wonderful Ettalong Beach offers calm, shallow waters. So calm, in fact, that on weekends you can do yoga on a standup paddleboard. This is a great beach for families, especially if you have young kids. And there are plenty of fantastic restaurants and cafes nearby to choose from, including the ever-popular Box on the Water. This is a breakfast-through-to-dinner eatery, with happy hour available daily as the sun sets.

Peaceful Central Coast Beaches
12. Maitland Bay
Set within Bouddi National Park, Maitland Bay is a stunner of a beach. Truly unspoilt. The waters are clear and the sands are golden. It’s unpatrolled, with no facilities, so bring everything you need and and enjoy being plunged deep into nature.
13. Forresters Beach
Despite being smack bang in the middle of the region, Forresters Beach never feels overcrowded. Cliffs at the northern end create rockpools that change with the tide – big enough for swimming at high tide, small enough for kids exploring at low tide. But the main stretch of ocean can get a little wavey so better for body surfing than long swims.

Dog-friendly Central Coast Beaches
14. Umina Beach
Umina Beach is so much more than a dog-friendly beach. Stretching over 2km, it’s perfect for a long walk with gentle waves that are great for kids learning to swim. Dog owners head to the southern end for some sandy off-leash time. There’s always plenty of happy pooches racing along the sand.
15. Putty Beach
Found just at the opening to the Bouddi National Park trail, Putty Beach will have you saying ‘how’s the serenity?’. There’s a designated section of Putty/Killcare Beach that’s perfect for off-leash dog runs – but beware, there’s strict rules about dogs going into the national park, so follow the signs and rules on the day. It’s also a glorious summer swimming spot for humans. A solid all-rounder!
